Not a destination as such, but worth a post in its own right just for the photo download, Route 40 in Patagonia is breathtaking. Literally.
Flying into El Calafate, we knew that we would love exploring Patagonia, and we were not disappointed.

We’d hired a pick-up truck to take us from El Calafate to our first stop in Patagonia, El Chaltén. What was supposed to be a pleasant drive proved to be awe-some is the true sense of the word.

Route 40 stretches across the Patagonian Plains to the Andes, and our destination at the foot of Mount Fitz-Roy.
The glacial plains have soil too shallow for tree roots, resulting in a 360° view of scrublands, turquoise glacial lakes, and a backdrop of snow-covered mountains. It is an unworldly experience accentuated by the absence of fellow travellers. Our Patagonian adventure had begun.
