It’s so easy to appreciate why Yves Saint Laurent and companion Pierre Bergé were so enchanted by Marrakech, and inspired to restore the Majorelle Gardens to their former glory and beyond.
We’d booked our slot early in the morning when the gardens were less crowded. Surprisingly for such an arid country, the gardens were a riot of colour, with the ubiquitous Majorelle blue of the buildings carefully configured to frame the rare cactus, citrus fruit trees and iridescent Bougainvillea. Bright yellow and orange pots run alongside geometric pools. It is a masterclass in garden design.

The site also housed the Berger Museum, a small but well curated display to showcase the lives of the ancient Berger people and in particular their fashion and jewellery.
The Yves Saint Laurent Museum itself was just stunning. A collection of mostly evening dresses, and a notable collection from the 1980’s; showy, sequinned and padded shoulders.

A short film on the life of the designer was the perfect end to the visit. And then, of course, there were shopping opportunities…
