Ballooning, Quads and Camels

The ballon trip was the major extravagance on our trip; and we were not disappointed. Neither Chris nor I had been in a hot air balloon, and the opportunity to take flight over the Atlas Mountains at sunrise was just too tempting.

It was amazing to think that we were flying, at the maximum point, at a height of 1,600m and in a wind of 40mph. We watched the sun rise from our magical vantage point, expertly guided by our glamorous pilot, Mafi.

I was pregnant on our first trip to Morocco, with my beautiful angel who never lived 👼 , which did limit our activities. This time, 19 years on and blessed with two wonderful teens, we wanted enjoy the full experience.

I had never ridden a quad bike. In fact, as a non-driver, steering was a challenge, and I was concerned that the quad would flip on its side at speed. Sophia was equally cautious, and Chris spent the morning anxious that at least one of us would have an accident by lunchtime. Anthony was in his element.

For the most part, the bike trail was not too challenging and really fun, and really beautiful. The morning’s activity was carefree, fun, dusty and surprisingly tiring: a stop for mint tea to admire our desert surroundings was most welcome.

Finally, the camel ride. What a disappointment! I had hoped for a trek on camelback across the Palmerai but instead we were led in a circle on a train of bored looking camels. I would like to do a desert track by camel, bu I guess that experience is just going to have to wait.
