Leaving Hà Nội early the following morning, we drove the Halong Bay for an overnight boat journey. Backdrop to Dr No, the scenery was utterly unique – huge rock formations with undulating layers of limestone documenting the movement of the rocks over time. The 2,000 uninhabited islands teamed with wildlife and with the waves of the noise of the insects, each island sounding like it was breathing.

The itinerary on board was pretty packed. From kayaking, exploring caves, ti chi, cookery lessons, squid fishing (unsuccessful) and swimming in the Bay. Not really my bag, but the pressure was on to join everyone in the water and fortunately I didn’t know that I was sharing the water with the most enormous jellyfish spotted later that evening.
