Hue to go

Totally in love with Hue. What a gorgeous City. After a short flight from Hà Nội, we arrived in Hue last night and survived a back-packer style supper in a « sketchy » (Sophia’s description) restaurant.

Today, having had the best night’s sleep, we spent the morning at the Imperial Citadel. Heavily damaged in the war, patched up and in need of investment, it is still possible to appreciate the splendour of the Royal palaces and the important contributions of the Emperors of the Nguyen Dynasty.

The Citadel really could merit a post on its own, and I was tempted to do a photo dump on this post, but this Blog isn’t intended as a history lesson. I love sightseeing and I think my passion is slightly indulged by Anthony, and Sophia prefers to look at it as a photo shoot….

After lunch, a quick detour to the Thein Mu Pagoda, then back to the hotel for a much anticipated and desperately needed dip in the pool – it is hot and humid (I have hair from hell) – and a cuppa.

The following morning, we drove into the hills outside Hue to visit the tombs of Minh Mang and Khai Dinh. The first was traditional Chinese architecture, set in tranquil grounds with lily covered lakes. The second, by contrast, was an imposing dark grey stone complex with ornate bas relief work inside the buildings.

After lunch, and rather glad to be out of the heat, we headed to out next stop, Hoi An.
